"Rather than trying to live large, it's become a point of pride and pleasure to explore how little each of us needs to get by."
For so long, society encouraged us to collect more, more possessions, more commitments, more responsibilities. Yet many of us are discovering that less doesn't leave us with less at all. It leaves us with peace.
My own journey of Simple Soulful Living continues to reveal the beauty of less being more. Downsizing my home, letting go of possessions, and streamlining the work I offer to the world has created something far more valuable than extra space, it has given me time. Time to reflect. Time to care for my body. Time to nurture my health and well-being.
As I experience the realities of aging, one truth has become crystal clear: our greatest priority later in life is ourselves. Staying strong, supple, healthy, and joyful requires attention. Self-care isn't selfish, it's our responsibility.
Years ago, I shared this thought with others:
"The reason we retire is so we can devote ourselves to our own well-being. Health takes time and attention. Your new job is you."
Now, semi-retired, I'm smiling as I follow my own advice. Each day I intentionally dedicate time to nourishing my body, moving with purpose, meditating, resting deeply, and simply being.
This week, I invite you to take one small step toward simplifying your life by creating space for yourself.
Schedule a little alone time, not because you're lonely, but because you deserve your own company. Leave your phone behind. Take a quiet walk. Sit beneath a tree. Watch the sunset. Gaze at the stars.
Or take yourself on a date. Enjoy lunch, a movie, or a cup of tea, all by yourself. You may discover that the person you've been needing to reconnect with has been waiting for you all along.
Keep it simple.
I'd love to hear how you create space for yourself this week.
