Settling in at Tres Casitas - adding Knee-care to my Squat routine
Seeing so many of you participating in my 100 Squats-a-Day video truly warms my heart. I wanted to tap in and let you know how it’s going for me, and I’d love to hear how it’s going for you as well. Send me your updates!
After my enthusiastic start to 100 squats every day in the month of May, by day 8 my knees came knocking at the door of perception. They kindly informed me that although they were indeed getting stronger, they also needed time to rest and rebuild the muscles now being challenged in new ways. As I bulit my butt muscles, my knees fell into repetitive joint use. So, I shifted gears and cut back to every other day.
This whole experience awakened another realization. I haven’t really been working out as hard as I used to in decades past. Back then, muscle soreness was simply part of building strength and endurance. I welcomed it. Lately, I haven’t allowed myself much discomfort. Could I be getting a little too comfortable in my "old age"? There’s a fine line between not doing enough, healthy challenges, and overdoing it. What’s truly needed is attentive listening. Listening to intuition rather than just pushing through or, even worse, quitting altogether.
When the feedback moved from my gluteal muscles into my knee joints, that was the red light to readjust my rhythm. The good news is that after two days of resting my somewhat stiff knees, I returned to the 100 squats and, surprisingly, it loosened up my joints this time. Ahhh... balance restored.
So I’ll continue on with my 100 squats every other day. In addition, I’m linking a 30-minute knee-loving video here just in case you’re experiencing something similar. This will be my practice today - combining squats with knee alignment and care. You can, too!
Athough I’ve had a couple of falls lately (good grief) they weren’t due to lack of strength and balance. They were due to lack of light. Walking in the dark on uneven terrain is simply not recommended. In fact, one of my number one rules is this:
Always shine a light in the darkness.
My intention is to live by that rule in more ways than one. I'm still learning. How human of me!
May you be well and stand strong on your own two feet.
